Description of the Services and Capacities of the IBIF

The following is a summary of the main activities in which the IBIF can provide advice and support for inter-institutional development:
  1. Poses, designs and executes research in the different areas of ecology, forestry and biodiversity in tropical forests.
  2. It monitors the dynamics of the forests (natural regeneration, growth, mortality, recruitment) of Bolivia through the National Network of Permanent Plots that consists of permanent plots distributed in different eco-regions of the country.
  3. It has a long-term silvicultural research program with a commercial-scale and replication experiment, unique in the world, to study the effects of harvesting intensity and the application of silvicultural treatments on biodiversity.
  4. It monitors and evaluates changes in the structure and composition of the forest produced by human intervention either through field diagnostics or using geographic information systems and remote sensing tools.
  5. The IBIF has a database to provide information on the permanent monitoring plots.
  6. Performs internal forest audits to assess the forest management status made by forest users in order to provide recommendations for improvement.
  7. Performs research on the identification of attributes of high conservation value within the principles and criteria of voluntary forest certification and provides recommendations for their management.
  8. Study fire ecology to assess the effect of fire on biodiversity and monitor heat sources through remote sensing to determine susceptibility in different regions
  9. Training in forest management for forest users in various topics: management of tools and Geographic Information Systems, use of reduced impact, first aid, road planning, forest fire prevention, disease prevention and forest health, silvicultural treatments application , and regeneration diagnostics.
  10. Designs, executes and evaluates specialized courses to support academic training in Universities and other educational centers.
  11. Advises and supports students and researchers in the approach, design, analysis and publication of basic and applied research for undergraduate and postgraduate theses, in addition to providing the conditions (logistical support in field stations support in office, transportation, lodging) optimal for the development of their research.
One of the pillars of the institution is the excellence of its professionals so that a large part of the IBIF staff has postgraduate training, with constant training and updating, which ensures the quality of the products to be delivered.
